The Hellenic History Tournament is an educational competition for students who want to learn about 3,500 years of Greek History. The tournament is open to students in grade 8-12 at the time of the competition. There are no additional requirements to compete. The winning team is awarded a $6,000 scholarship prize ($2,000/student) and the second place team is awarded a $3,000 scholarship prize ($1,000/student). The top two teams will qualify for the National Rounds at the Supreme Convention in Chicago, Illinois (July 5, 2019), where there will be an additional $12,000 in scholarship prize money awarded.
Students form their own 3-member teams, select a team name, and elect a team captain. Each team member in required to fill out the registration form and pay the $35 registration fee by the registration deadline. In return, each contestant receives a copy of “Hellenika, Heritage and History” by T. Peter Limber, the book used as the basis for most of the competition questions.
The tournament takes place during a single Saturday in the spring. All contestants receive a certificate of participation before the competition starts. The competition has two preliminary rounds with teams competing in simultaneous matches. During a match, questions are asked in an exciting TV quiz show environment that keeps the audience aware and involved. Friends and family members of contestants are welcome to watch. The team that correctly answers the most of the 24 questions is the winner of the match. The top teams advance to the knock-out rounds where the winning teams in each round advance to the next round and the losing teams are eliminated. The process continues until the final match between the last two remaining teams.
